INSULTING ALLIES
A few days ago the right whingers were all outraged after John Kerry made some disparaging remarks about Interim Iraqi Prime Minister, Allawi. Some, like Instarube even claimed it called into question Kerry's patriotism and said remarks like these and others coming from the Kerry campaign were hurting America's relationship with some of its allies. But is this really the case? As this interview with the Saudi Foreign Minister shows, the answer is unmistakeably no.
BLITZER: But you must be in support -- you must be quietly in favor of Bush given what John Kerry has said about Saudi Arabia including at the Democratic Convention. All of America's allies realize that politicians, especially ones who are vying for the presidency of the United States, make remarks that are only meant to be campaign rhetoric and have no bearing on what they would be like if elected to office. In fact, it smacks of condescension that the right whingers would think the rest of us out in the world beyond America are so stupid that we can't recognize campaign rhetoric when we hear it.
AL-JUBEIR: Well, not everything that you see is actually what it is. This is, after all, the political funny season in the United States and things are said that really have no long-term...
BLITZER: So John Kerry's condemnation of some of the actions of Saudi Arabia mean nothing?
AL-JUBEIR: If he knew better I think he wouldn't say them. He's saying them for political purposes in order to rally a crowd or whatever. But we don't take these things personal. We're very thick- skinned. We know that what is said in campaigns does not translate into action on somebody in the White House.
The undeniable facts are that Bush has alienated many of America's allies with his actions over the past four years and this has caused and will continue to cause problems for the US when it deals with these nations. Kerry on the other hand would enter office with a clean slate and because of this would be able to garner support--even if only minor--that Bush would not have otherwise been able to. Whether anyone likes it or not, the reality is that the US is the leader of the free world but America's ability to lead is severely hampered if its allies don't like or can't work with the man in charge. And it's actions not campaign rhetoric that causes rifts to grow between America and its allies.
Happy thoughts to you.

LAWLESS IN IRAQ
Truck drivers in Iraq tell how lawless the country has become.
The truckers who traverse Iraq's long, desolate stretches of highway say that outside the three northern provinces under Kurdish control, much of the countryside has become a no man's land where criminals collude with police to rob and occasionally kill truckers. While much has been made of the daily attacks by insurgents and what is to be done about them, little attention has been focused on the rise of common crime that plagues Iraq. The situation grows worse everyday and most of the trucking companies working in the country can no longer find enough people to drive all the trucks that are available to be used.
"Once, I gave them all the money I had," said Karim Amin, a grizzled 60-year-old trucker who has been robbed three times driving between Baghdad and Kut in southern Iraq.
"They said, 'That's not all you have. You've got money inside the car.' So they searched the car and found nothing. And they were so angry they nearly beat me to death."
Under Saddam Hussein, the biggest headaches truckers faced were corrupt police officers who collected bribes at checkpoints. Now, truckers say they toss and turn at night for fear that bandits will steal their vehicles or leave them dead on the side of the road the next day.
Each of Iraq's roads poses its own special peril. Each band of criminals has its unique appetite for loot.
As the country's security deteriorates even further it will begin to impact the movement of goods that fuel any society causing even greater deprivation in the population. This in turn may result in further disillusionment amongst the Iraqis and cause more of them to join in with the insurgents.
Bush has wasted more than a year by doing nothing to address this problem. Few Iraqi police have been trained to replace the ones who were disbanded when the occupation began and the worst of it is that Bush has repeatedly refused offers to help train the IP from various nations, including Canada.
Meanwhile, a perfectly viable solution to the problem has already been proposed by John Kerry. His simple plan consists of sending IP recruits to nations who are unwilling to send troops to Iraq out of concern over the deteriorating security in the country, to be trained in an environment that is safe and secure for everyone. This has even been agreed to by a number of nations who would be willing to train thousands of additional IP forces that could then return to Iraq and deal with the rampant lawlessness.
But dealing with these common criminals is simply not a concern for Bush and since a viable, organized Iraqi government is something that will not become a reality in the near future--if at all--the people of Iraq have been left to fend for themselves.
Happy thoughts to you.

THANK YOU VIETNAM DRAFT DODGERS
Who knew the secret to keeping rubbish out of your country could be something as simple as erecting a statue.
Fox News aired a report about a group headed by a former Seattle resident, Isaac Romano, that plans to erect a statue in honour of draft dodgers who fled the US to Canada during the Vietnam war. Predictably, the Foxbots were not happy and despite this being a wholly private endeavour, launched themselves into a frenetic tirade against the town government.
Nelson's city hall was immediately flooded with angry phone calls, e-mails and letters, most of them from furious Americans vowing never to set foot here again.
''If you think a monument to yellow belly cowards is going to somehow give a sense of respectfulness to these shameful Americans, who turned their backs on their country, you are sadly mistaken,'' one angry American wrote in an e-mail to city hall. ''I for one will never visit your town and spend a thin dime ever again, if this thing is built.''I have news for any right whingers who are upset over this. Nobody, except the small group of sycophantic Republicanucks, gives a crap if you ever visit Canada again. In fact, here is a great big "Fuck you, you're not welcome here" disinvitation. I for one hope Mr. Romano and his group proceed with this statue and I also hope that a similar memorial is erected in every other Canadian town and city. If one statue can keep out a few of the fascist right whingers, imagine what a stink free environment we'd be able to maintain here if thousands of similar statues kept us completely free of them.
Read more about the "Our Way Home Reunion" as well as other projects this learned scholar and man of peace, Isaac Romano, has been involved with in the past.

WMD ARMED TERRORISTS
One of the justifications for invading Iraq the right whingers continuously peddle is that the US could not chance Saddam arming terrorists with the materials they would need to make WMDs. Funny thing, but it looks like those pesky terrorists aren't bothering to shop at the local Rogue Regime-Mart for their WMD making needs.
POLICE arrested four men in London under Britain's anti-terrorist law, as a newspaper claimed it had infiltrated a gang trying to buy radioactive material for a "dirty bomb".
The News of the World said it had co-operated with police after it infiltrated a gang that claimed to be looking for radioactive material on behalf of a Saudi described as sympathetic to "the Muslim cause".It's been my opinion for some time now that Bush's obsession with the possibility that WMD armed rogue regimes would pass them on to terrorists has been both baseless and a distraction to the real threat. The most likely source of material has always been Russia and should terrorists ever succeed in obtaining these materials it will undoubtably come as a result of the involvement of the Russian Mafia or other criminal elements within that country.
The Saudi, whose name was not disclosed, was reportedly willing to pay £300,000 (756,000) in cash for a kilogram of "highly powerful radioactive material" from Russia known as Red Mercury.
The reasoning behind this is quite simple. Kim Jong and the Mullahs of Iran have too much to lose if they were to get caught passing off WMD materials to terrorists. Criminals in Russia on the other hand, have nothing to lose since the US would not invade Russia as a result of the actions.
This is yet another indication that Bush is focusing his attentions on the wrong thing. Browbeating rogue nations into giving up their WMD technology might make for good press and campaign fodder, but in the end it does nothing to stop terrorists from obtaining materials that can be secured elsewhere.
Happy thoughts to you.

VIGILANTISM IN IRAQ
From Iraq the Model.
Some good news!Read the comments and note how it doesn't even occur to any of these rubes that the 6 Syrians, who were beaten by the vigilante mob, might not have even had anything to do with the bombing or any other crime. It's simply good enough for them and the mob that something happened and there were a bunch of foreigners around on which they could vent their anger. One has to wonder if American forces hadn't been there what fate these men would have suffered at the hands of this enraged mob.
A group of Iraqi citizens in Al Karkh/ Khidr Al Yas arrested 6 Syrian terrorists after placing a land mine at the gate of Bab Al Mu’a dam bridge from Al Karkh side.
According to New Sabah newspaper, after a road side bomb exploded missing an American convoy that was patrolling in the area, a group of citizens who happened to be there noticed a bunch of young men who looked foreigners (turned out to be Syrians) that were gathering near the place and that looked suspicious. The citizens found their atittude very suspicious and they were not from the area, so they jumped on them and kicked them until some of them started to bleed and then turned them on to the American forces. Eyewitnesses said that the citizens were shouting "Terrorists. You are targeting our children and families. You are killing our youths"
This incident that took place near Haifa street comes after many attacks that terrorist Arabs were accused of carrying against American forces and Iraqi police stations.
What a wonderful country Bush is turning Iraq into. A place where xenophobia abounds and people are guilty until proven innocent.

AXIS OF WEASELS
From Michelle Malkin.
FROM THE COINER OF THE PHRASE "AXIS OF WEASELS"Michelle is referring to Scott Ott, the writer behind Scrappleface who wrote this satirical post on January 22, 2003 in which he refers to Germany and France as an "axis of weasels".
Funny thing however, is Scott Ott did not coin the phrase "axis of weasels". The person who did coin it is Barry Crimmins who wrote this article, entitled "Axis of Weasels", on February 15, 2002--almost a full year before the one penned by Scott Ott. And the phrase in Barry's article is not made in reference to France and Germany but to Bush and company.
It was meant to obscure the growing din of the Take the Money Enron scandal, a scam in which Bush's own Axis of Weasels is deeply implicated.A quick google.groups search of the phrase "axis of weasels" confirms that the first mention of it in internet discussion forums is in reference to the very article by Barry Crimmins. Barry even mentions on his own website how the right whingers co-opted the phrase he coined.
And by the way it took the right-wing press a year to co-opt and misuse a term I coined after last year's SUA inanity:Clearly this establishes the coiner of the phrase "axis of weasels" was Barry Crimmins, not Scott Ott as Malkin claims and the following conclusions about this "axis of weasels" can be drawn.
Axis of Weasels
1) Michelle Malkin's fact checking ability is so piss poor that nothing she writes should ever be taken as factual.
2) Right whingers will believe anything as long as it's repeated often enough.
3) Scott Ott should stop taking credit for a phrase he didn't coin and in fact, may have ripped off from another writer.

STILL MORE CRUSHING OF DISSENT
In Saudi Arabia.
A Saudi court sentenced a university professor to five years in prison Sunday on charges of sowing dissent after he compared U.S. killings of Iraqi civilians to Osama bin Laden's terror attacks.5 years in prison for criticizing America. How proud the right whingers must be to see Bush brand democracy and values being exported to the Middle East.
Saeed bin Mubarak al-Zaeer, a 57-year-old university professor, was sentenced by the court in the capital Riyadh. The sentencing took place without the presence of a lawyer representing al-Zaeer.
Al-Zaeer was detained by security forces in April after he appeared on the Al-Jazeera television station and made comments comparing the killing of civilians in terror attacks by bin Laden's al-Qaida group with Iraqi civilians killed by U.S. forces or Palestinians killed by Israelis.

COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATISM IN ACTION
Schwarzenegger terminates a minimum wage hike.
The minimum wage bill would have raised California's minimum wage from $6.75 to $7.25 Jan. 1 and to $7.75 on Jan. 1, 2006. The federal minimum wage is $5.15 an hour.Seriously, does anyone buy into the bullshit that a pair of meagre 50 cent raises to the minimum wage spaced a year apart would have had any kind of impact on California's economy? When you consider that only a small segment of the population works for minimum wage, the economic impact of it is negligible to a trillion dollar economy. A raise of $40 per week for employee labour is chump change to even a small business, but this money can have a significant impact on someone struggling to make it from paycheque to paycheque.
Bill supporters said the minimum wage hasn't kept up with inflation, but Schwarzenegger said the legislation would have discouraged economic growth.
"Now is not the time to create barriers to our economic recovery or reverse the momentum we have generated," he said in a veto message. "I want to create more jobs and make every California job more secure."
This is just another typical example of how the right whingers have become nothing less than whores to corporate interests at the expense of poor people whose lives would benefit from these increases. Compassionate conservatism; it's as real as the Easter Bunny.
Update: Here are some numbers on California and its economy.
According to a study by the Public Policy Institute of California in 2000, 1.6 million Californians worked at or near the minimum wage. Even if we now assume that 2 million Californians work at or near the minimum wage level, a $1 dollar an hour increase in wages would only cost employers an additional $4 billion per year. This amounts to less than one third of one percent (0.3%) of California's $1.3 trillion dollar economy. Yeah, California would slide into the ocean over a measly buck an hour increase in the minimum wage.
Happy thoughts to you.

TERRORISM: HOW WILL THE RIGHT WHINGERS DEFINE IT TODAY
The Ottawa citizen has responded to the criticism by the CBC that they are misusing the term terrorists in their stories and have offered this as their definition of what terrorism is.
Terrorism is a technical term. It describes a modus operandi, a tactic. We side with security professionals who define terrorism as the deliberate targeting of civilians in pursuit of a political goal.Sounds reasonable to me, but the problem is that the right whingers don't stick to it as evidenced by the fact that Omar Khadr, who is currently being held in Gitmo, is considered a terrorist regardless of the fact that his actions never targetted civilians.
New U.S. Department of Defence documents, obtained by The Globe and Mail, say that Mr. Khadr, who will turn 18 this weekend, is a trained al-Qaeda operative who planted land mines intended to blow up U.S. vehicles. This is said to have happened right before his capture during a firefight in July, 2002, in which he is believed to have killed an American soldier. One thing that is commonly agreed upon by both the right and the left is that terrorism is something that is directed against civilians. So where in this list of actions does it mention anything about attacks on civilians that would brand this kid as one? This is where we get to the crux of the problem in regards to defining terrorism. Whenever a mutually acceptable definition is agreed upon, the right whingers will always redefine it to meet the requirements of the moment.
"Circa June, 2002, the detainee conducted a surveillance mission where he went to an airport near Khost to collect information on U.S. convoy movements," the documents say. "On July 20, 2002, detainee planted 10 mines against U.S. forces in the mountain region between Khost and Ghardez. This region is a choke point where U.S. convoys would travel."
The documents further say that Mr. Khadr has admitted working as a translator to co-ordinate al-Qaeda land-mine missions and "acknowledged that these land-mine missions are acts of terrorism and that participating in them would make him a terrorist."
The fact of the matter is that Omar Khadr is not a terrorist. He is nothing more than a kid who was brainwashed by his father into joining a terrorist cause and ended up fighting against an invading army in Afghanistan. Unless the US has further evidence that he has been involved in attacks against civilians, there is no case that he has committed terrorist actions and should not have to suffer prosecution in Bush's illegal kangaroo court.
Happy thoughts to you.

THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING COALITION
The troop committment by coalition members keeps getting smaller and smaller.
The British Army is to start pulling troops out of Iraq next month despite the deteriorating security situation in much of the country, The Observer has learnt. When, most likely by next summer, there are only US troops left in Iraq, can we finally agree that the invasion and subsequent occupation of the country is a unilateral US endeavor? Or will you right whingers cling to the fantasy that Bush really does have a coalition because the Marshall Islands are still behind him, if not in body at least in spirit?
The main British combat force in Iraq, about 5,000-strong, will be reduced by around a third by the end of October during a routine rotation of units.

DUMBNATION STRIKES AGAIN
Shorter Damian Penny: The damned dirty ragheads are to blame for us calling them damned dirty ragheads.
I kid you not, that is the gist of what this bigot is saying. But lets back up and travel down the road that led this wingnut to his blame the victim conclusion. The story begins with this article from the CBC in which Reuters complains about how certain Canadian publications are taking their newswire feeds and changing them.
The world's oldest news agency, Reuters, says it will complain to CanWest Global's newspaper chain about its use of the word "terrorist" when editing stories dealing with the Middle East. From there, we go to this post on the Western Standard's blog where a copy of a joint news release from NCCAR and CAF can be found. In this news release, these two Muslim/Arab advocacy groups call for the Ontario Press Council to investigate incidents of biased reporting against Arabs by CanWest publications and cite passages of the CBC article as evidence.
Papers owned by CanWest Publications, Canada's largest newspaper chain, have been altering words and phrases in some newswire copy stories dealing with the war in Iraq and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, thereby changing their meaning.
"This is another troubling example of clear bias by CanWest publications like the National Post and the Ottawa Citizen in applying different standards towards Arabs and Muslims when reporting," said NCCAR Executive Director Mazen Chouaib.Their complaint has validity to it. It has been pointed out repeatedly, here on my blahg and other places, that there is a growing intolerance towards Arabs in North America. On nearly every right wing site you can see evidence of this intolerance and bigotry as right whinger after right whinger labels Islam as evil or makes claims that all Muslims are terrorists. And even if this were not true, these advocacy groups would be well within their right to file a complaint if they perceived there was a bias in the media against them.
"We have complained repeatedly that there is a perceived anti-Arab agenda with these publications and we hope that this will force them to change their methods and expose to Canadians the validity of our point of view."
Now we get back to Damian Penny, who wrote this turd.
Arab and Muslim advocacy groups, undeniably upset about the way their communities have become identified with terrorism, have had a choice: they could denounce the horrendous acts being carried out in their name, or they could whine about people daring to say Hamas, Hezbollah and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade are something more sinister than advocacy groups. This is a perfect example of the backwards thinking of the right whingers. The right to complain and have your complaints taken seriously concerning bias and bigotry towards your group is not dependent on how vocal you are about the misdeeds of a small segment within your group. If this backwards thinking were the case, Martin Luther King Jr. would have been forced to begin each and every one of his speeches regarding oppression and bigotry towards black people by first condemning the small segment of black people who had committed crimes. But he didn't, nor did he have to in order for his words and complaints to be heard and taken seriously.
Whether or not the Arab community chooses to condemn the actions of Arab terrorists has no bearing on whether or not they feel the media is being biased against them. And for right whingers like Damian Penny to claim these groups should not speak out against that bias without first meeting his conditions betrays nothing less than a blame the victim mentality. Bigotry is not the fault of the victim, it's the fault of the bigot and Damian Penny once again displays that fault.
Happy thoughts to you.

LET'S BLAME THE IRAQIS
You know it had to start happening sooner or later.
Marine Cpl. Travis Friedrichsen, a sandy-haired 21-year-old from Denison, Iowa, used to take Tootsie Rolls and lollipops out of care packages from home and give them to Iraqi children. Not anymore.Gee, who predicted that the Iraqi people would not be grateful for the US invading their homeland and killing tens of thousands of their family members and friends? Oh right, everyone but the right whingers, who slurped up the nonsense that they'd be greeted with hugs and kisses, knew this was going to happen.
"My whole opinion of the people here has changed. There aren't any good people," said Friedrichsen, who says his first instinct now is to scan even youngsters' hands for weapons.
Subtle hostility extends to Iraqi adults, and evidence of betrayal among some of the country's officials is causing some American troops to have second thoughts.
"We're out here giving our lives for these people," said Sgt. Jesse Jordan, 25, of Grove Hill, Ala. "You'd think they'd show some gratitude. Instead, they don't seem to care."
Obviously it's long past time for the right whingers to stop trying to pin the blame for Iraqmire on everyone else and start pointing the finger at the person who created the mess; President Bush.

REAL RIGHT WHINGER VIOLENCE
Sadly, this incident was not staged.
A man gave a Nazi salute, shouted out "White Power," and called a stranger "Jew-boy" just moments before knocking him down outside a St. Louis diner and stomping on his head with work boots, jurors were told Wednesday. In a bitter twist of irony, it turns out that the victim was not even Jewish. But that is not the issue since the attacker clearly thought he was. I find it simply astounding that the right whingers howl about any incidents of anti-semitism--no matter how incidental--and claim it's caused by the left while ignoring incidents like this that are perpetrated by their own extremists.
The man on trial, Kevin A. Johnson, "spewed out these racial slurs" in a burst of hatred toward the victim, Michael Schnelle, said Assistant Circuit Attorney Robert Craddick in opening statements at Johnson's murder trial.
The injuries were inflicted about 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 1, 2002, and Schnelle died of his injuries the next day, Craddick said.

I'D RATHER NOT, BUT
So it would seem that my resident right whingers want to have it out about these alledgedly fraudulent memos. Okay, but here's the thing. I don't care. I don't care if they are real and I don't care if they are fake. The reason is quite simple. They are a non issue relating to a non issue. Everything related to the events of 35 years ago is so 35 years ago and not worthy of being the centrepiece in a presidential campaign. Sure, I've enjoyed arguing about Swiftboat vets and whether or not Bush was AWOL on other forums, but I've pretty well steered clear of that nonsense on my blahg. The two posts I've written about the memo nonsense have both been to make fun of the memo nonsense.
That said, let's address another issue that stems from the memo nonsense; the notion that if these memos are fakes, it somehow destroys CBS's credibility.
Let's just take it for granted that the memos are fraudulent and CBS had the wool pulled over its eyes. So what, does that really mean CBS no longer has any credibility? Before you answer, bear in mind that the White House had the wool pulled over its eyes by Ahmed Chalabi. If you believe this incident destroys the credibility of CBS then you must also accept that the credibility of the White House lies in tatters. And if this is just a matter of CBS not admitting they were hoodwinked and sticking to their claim that the memos are real, I again say so what. The White House never admitted they were hoodwinked by Chalabi and stuck to their story regardless of how wrong or fraudulent the claims were.
The simple fact of the matter is that this whole memo nonsense has no downside for anyone but the right whingers. The credibility of CBS is already tarnished in the eyes of the right, so even if the memos are fake it won't mean squat to them. The left already believes that Bush shirked his National Guard duties so even if the memos are real, it won't mean squat to him. However, if the memos are at some time proven to be real, it will be just one more nail in the coffin of the right whinger's credibility. Given how many times the right whingers have already been wrong, I can't imagne their coffin needs many more nails pounded into it before it's finally chucked in a hole and covered over with dirt.
So keep braying about the memos, rubes. The only credibility on the line is yours.
Happy thoughts to you.

BLAHG THOUGHTS
While Iraq burns, injustice flourishes in America, the backdoor draft gains momentum, mistakes are made, Bush continues to spend like a drunken sailor, democracy is subverted, crimes are revealed and threats are ignored, it just warms my heart to know that the brave men and women of the 101st Keyboard Brigade are hard at work defending America from Dan Rather.

THREE CHEERS FOR THE TERRORISTS
The right whingers have one thing right. Someone is cheering for terrorists, but it's not the left.
A little-noticed but chilling scene at Opa-locka Airport outside Miami last month demonstrates that the Bush administration's commitment to fighting international terrorism can be overtaken by presidential politics--even if that means admitting known terrorists onto U.S. soil.
That's what happened when outgoing Panamanian President Mireya Moscoso inexplicably pardoned four Cuban exiles convicted of "endangering public safety" for their role in an assassination plot against Fidel Castro during a 2000 international summit in Panama.
After their release, three of the four immediately flew via private jet to Miami, where they were greeted with a cheering fiesta organized by the hard-line anti-Castro community. Federal officials briefly interviewed the pardoned men--all holders of U.S. passports--and then let them go their way.
The terrorist backgrounds of Posada's three comrades-in-arms are as well documented as their leader's. Guillermo Novo once fired a bazooka at the U.N. building; in February 1979, he was convicted and sentenced to 40 years for conspiracy in the 1976 assassination of former Chilean diplomat Orlando Letelier and his American colleague, Ronni Moffitt, in Washington. (His conviction was subsequently vacated on a legal technicality.) Gaspar Jimenez was convicted and imprisoned in Mexico in 1977 for murdering a Cuban consulate official; he was released by authorities in 1983. Pedro Remon received a 10-year sentence in 1986 for conspiring to kill Cuba's ambassador to the United Nations in 1980. These are violent men. Panamanian prosecutors said they had planned to detonate 33 pounds of explosives while Castro was speaking at a university in Panama. Had they not been intercepted by the authorities, the blast not only would have killed the Cuban president but quite possibly hundreds of others gathered to hear him speak during the inter-American summit. But wait, it gets better. Here is the money quote.
For a small but powerful minority in the Cuban American community, the Posada gang are freedom fighters.Does anyone remember any right whinger making a peep about this? Me neither. So much for that global war on terror and the claims by the right whingers that all terrorism is related and must be defeated. It's a little hard to believe that when they are welcoming terrorists with open arms.
Happy thoughts to you.

RIGHT WHINGERS APPROVED OF INSURGENT FINANCING TECHNIQUES
Remember when the right whingers were claiming that the increased importation of automobiles into Iraq indicated that Bush was succeeding? No, then let me refresh your memory. Here is just one example of it from Instarube.
THE GERMAN PRESS is beginning to notice that Iraq isn't a quagmire after all: "The Americans have eliminated all taxes and import customs for eight months, more than a half million cars have rolled into the country since the war ended. Under Saddam it was a strictly regulated matter and to get a car one needed a lot of money along with good connections."Well, it's a funny thing, but apparently those pesky insurgents, who are engaged in killing Americans, are financed by those imported automobiles.
'We used to be able to use banks and bank transfers. Now it is harder,' Abu Mujahed said. 'Often sympathisers buy cars in Saudi Arabia or Jordan and we get them driven to Baghdad or Basra and we sell them. A supporter in the UK has recently sent an Opel pick-up.Congratulations to the right whingers for enabling the insurgents to raise money right under their noses. Take a bow, this is your finest moment.
Happy thoughts to you.

MORE RIGHT WHINGER LIES
Do the right whingers even remember how to tell the truth? Obviously not.
A few days ago, a new poll showed that a majority of Canadians do not see their country as a potential terror target. This is a perfect example that illustrates how the right whingers have become pathological liars. When you actually take a look at the poll Damian links to you can see it does not support his claim.
A majority of Canadians think Canada won't be a likely target for terrorists in the next two years, a poll released yesterday revealed. As you can clearly see, the poll did not indicate that Canadians do not see their country as a potential terror target but that they just don't view it as likely we'll get hit any time soon. There is a big difference between what the poll actually says and Penny's lies about what it says.
For example, If I were to say, "I don't think it's likely I'll die in the next two years," this would not in any way mean that I think I'm never going to die. But that is exactly how this dishonest right whinger would portray the statement.
Penny then goes on to make this idiotic statement.
We can bury our heads in the sand and keep believing these people won't do anything to inoffensive, friendly Canada, or we can do all we can to stop them. It's our choice.Of course, this statement depends on his earlier lie that Canadians think we won't ever be a target in order to justify it as relevant. The fact of the matter is that this statement is completely meaningless because it's based on a lie.
To address this ridiculous final statement by Damian Penny, I would offer this. We can bury our heads in the sand and keep believing that right whingers are telling the truth or we can do all we can to expose them. It's our choice.
As for the poll itself, I'm with the majority. I think it's unlikely Canada will get hit anytime soon. Why? Because I'd say Canada is a low priority target with Al Qaeda. Because it was hard enough for them to carry out a strike in Canada to begin with and ever since 9/11 it has become even more difficult for them due to increased security both here and in the US. Because Canada is not engaged in any regional conflicts, like Russia and Israel are, that would cause local terrorist groups to target us. Because Al Qaeda appears to be currently targetting the members of Bush's Iraq coalition. All these factors and more give weight to the argument that Canada won't likely be attacked within the next two years. However, due to the fact that Canada is engaged in the overall war on terror, we most likely will eventually get hit. But the logical arguments point to later rather than sooner.
Happy thoughts to you.

ANOTHER SLAP ON THE WRIST
Yesterday I blahgged about two US soldiers who would not even be brought to trial for the crime of murder because of incompetence by those handling the cases. I pointed out that while America makes a big show of prosecuting their soldiers for crimes, the reality is that they rarely suffer punishment harder than a slap on the wrist. Here is an example of what I mean.
The first U.S. military intelligence soldier to be court-martialed over the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal was sentenced Saturday to eight months in jail, a reduction in rank and a bad conduct discharge.Cruz gets eight lousy months for his part in torturing Iraqi prisoners and Jeremy Sivits received a one year slap on the wrist. What a joke. The Bush government has no shame and has become exactly what they claim to be fighting against.
Specialist Armin Cruz, 24, had pleaded guilty to maltreatment and conspiracy to maltreat detainees at the prison near Baghdad on the night of October 25, 2003. The court martial accepted his guilty plea.

A LETTER TO MICHELLE MALKIN
I've just sent this letter to Michelle Malkin congratulating her on the fine work she is doing for white supremists everywhere.
From: Robert McClellandI'll let you know if Malkin sends me a reply.
To: malkin@comcast.net
Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2004
Subject: Congratulations
Dear Michelle Malkin
I just wanted to congratulate you on the fine work you are doing and for becoming the darling diva of fine white Christian organizations like Stormfront who love your columns on immigration and your passioned defense of internment. You should consider this quite an honour since it's not often these people become so enamored of someone who is not a white Christian just like they are. That your words can so easily make them brush aside their prejudices speaks volumes about the validity of your work.
But don't take my word for it, just read the praise of one of Stormfront's members who goes by the name of SkinsFan65.
"Michelle Malkin is a Filipino American whose frequent syndicated columns, media presence and books are great for the anti-immigration cause I believe in...."
How can you not beam with pride knowing that your work is being used to further the good cause of the fine upstanding white Christian folks at Stormfront. Surely this makes all the laboured hours spent researching your work worth it.
For years these topics were only whispered about in backroom meetings by these white Christians who were never taken seriously by anyone. But now, with your aid, they can hold their heads up high and discuss these subjects out in the open amongst their peers like you and all your followers. You have done them a great service by moving their views into the mainstream and for that I'm quite certain they would be willing to make you an honourary member despite your non-white Christian heritage.
Once again, congratulations on your success and keep up the good work. The white Christians at Stormfront are depending on you.
Sincerely,
Robert McClelland
While we're all waiting for that reply from Michelle however, you can read this outstanding post from Orcinus about supremicism's silent creep.
Happy thoughts to you.

MEMO TO PAUL MARTIN
Pull your head out of your ass.
Canada is giving the United Nations $1-million to investigate human-rights abuses in Darfur even though Ottawa is still not ready to call the atrocities committed in that region of western Sudan a genocide. For gawd sakes man, grow some balls and address the United Nations Security Council in order to call for an immediate resolution to send a substantial peacekeeping force to the region. Studying the bloody problem to determine if it's "genocide" or just "a lot of people being murdered" is not going to accomplish a damned thing. And neither will giving $20 million to the Africa Union if they can put together a peacekeeping force. Boots on the ground, including Canadian ones, is the only solution to this despicable situation. We need not engage in regime change nor pursue those who are committing these crimes. We only need to protect the the victims so as to provide time for the Sudanese government to be pressured into dealing with the problem.
The Canadian contribution will help the UN to determine the extent of the human-rights abuses and identify who is responsible, International Co-operation Minister Aileen Carroll said yesterday.
Do it now! Not next week or next month, but right now. Or admit you have no principles and resign from office so Canada will be spared the shame of your indifference.
Happy thoughts to you.

THE BEST BLAHGOSPHERE REACTIONS TO THE MEMOS
Best Silver Lining: Wonkette
What really rocks, though, is that this whole to-do has forced bloggers to do a lot of research about antique typewriters. Next thing you know, they'll have to learn about "leaving the house" or "taking notes". . .Hey, if only we were both single. . .and I could leave the house.
Best Outrage: Roger L. Simon
Dan Rather and CBS must suffer extreme consequences for continuing to stonewall the American public on the putative Bush memos. Because for decades CBS has had one of the most important licenses in American broadcasting, they have special responsibility to the people of this nation. The puerile defense offered by Dan Rather this evening on the CBS News (transcripts here) is an insult to the citizens of this country and potential liability to the two-party system as we know it. The extraordinary personal selfishness of Rather at a time national crisis is beyond comprehension. If this continues much longer, Viacom better consider dumping CBS fast.An anonymous source close to Mr. Simon claims that while Roger was writing this post, he was speaking in tongues, vomiting green pea soup and his head was rotating 360 degrees.
Best Defense: The Poor Man
Let me save everyone a whole lot of time. They are genuine. How do I know? Because the internet is currently awash in wingnuts claiming the memos are fakes. Ergo, they are for real. Q.E.D.Indeed. The wingnuts still believe the discovery of Saddam's WMDs is imminent. And Drudge was right once in `98 but has been wrong about everything since then. And Rush is a drugged out freak. A stopped clock has a better record of accuracy than this troika of retards.
Some people may feel that I'm just being flip here. Is that so, some people? Tell me: how rich would you be right now if, every time something was posted on a right-wing message board, or everytime Drudge had an exclusive, or any time Rush Limbaugh revealed a secret truth that the liberal media won't tell you, you called up your bookie and put down $20 even money on "bullshit"? The correct answer is: "pretty fucking rich". The correct answer is: "I would never, never lose." So, if anyone doubts my methodology, I have a crisp new $20 bill that just told me that I'm 100% right and you're just too dumb to see it. If any of you champs out there think me and Andrew Jackson are both wrong, well then, today's your lucky day, because we're paying 2:1. If you need us, we'll be on the couch playing ESPN NHL 2K5. Peace.
Best Wingnuttery: Little Green Footballs
And my Microsoft Word version, typed in 2004, is an exact match for the documents trumpeted by CBS News as "authentic".By "exact match" of course, he means exact as long as you overlook all of the differences in the characters, like the difference between the number 1 in the date of the original and in his "exact match". Charles standards of an "exact match" seem to be the equivalent of someone claiming they've forged a perfect copy of the Mona Lisa as long as you overlook the fact that Da Vinci's famous smile in the forgery is now topped by a mustache. But hey, it's close so that cleary proves someone could have almost forged these documents.
Happy thoughts to you.

CHENEY-0, EDWARDS-1
The two VP candidates went head to head today.
Indicators measure the nation's unemployment rate, consumer spending and other economic milestones, but Vice President Dick Cheney says it misses the hundreds of thousands who make money selling on eBay.
"That's a source that didn't even exist 10 years ago," Cheney told an audience in Cincinnati on Thursday. "Four hundred thousand people make some money trading on eBay."
Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards responded that Cheney's comments show how "out of touch" he and President Bush are with the economy.Edwards is going to eat Cheney's lunch in the debate.
"If we only included bake sales and how much money kids make at lemonade stands, this economy would really be cooking," Edwards said in a statement.

CRIME AND NO PUNISHMENT
Question: What do you do if your soldiers are caught committing serious crimes like murder but you want to protect them from facing serious punishment?
Answer 1: Conveniently lose the evidence.
The military has lost key evidence in its investigation into the death of an Iraqi man beaten by Marine prison guards, throwing into doubt the status of a court-martial of one of the guards.Answer 2: Make sure the people prosecuting the crimes are incompetent.
The missing evidence includes bones taken from the throat and chest of Nagem Hatab, attorneys said Thursday at a hearing for Maj. Clarke Paulus.
Military officials on Tuesday dropped criminal charges against a soldier accused of forcing an Iraqi civilian to jump to his death from a bridge over the Tigris River.
Defence attorneys have disputed the circumstances of Hassoun's death after he and his cousin were picked up for being out after curfew. They said investigators bungled the case by not exhuming the body and doing an autopsy.Sure, the Americans make a big deal about how they prosecute their soldiers who commit crimes, but in the end do any of them ever receive more than a slap on the wrist as punishment?
Investigators acknowledged they never saw the body, saying they relied on the word of relatives and a video made by the victim's family that shows a corpse in a coffin.
Happy thoughts to you.

AL QAEDA CLARIFIES ENDORSEMENT
By now you've probably heard about the latest message that was released by Al Qaeda declaring that victory over the American infidels is at hand. However, there was more to the message that wasn't broadcast and My Blahg has obtained a transcript of the remaining remarks by Ayman al-Zawahri.
"There is one last matter I wish to discuss. It has been said by some that Al Qaeda backs George Bush for re-election and by others that we endorse John Kerry. The truth of the matter is that in the beginning we did wish for Bush to be elected. His many miscalculations in the war against us has resulted in a boon to our membership. Ever since he invaded Iraq we have been swamped by hordes of angry Muslims who wish to join our glorious cause."
"However, once our ranks grew to such enormous proportions, we decided that Al Qaeda would be better off backing the flip-flopping Frenchman because his indecisiveness and wish to be more sensitive to our needs would most assuredly make it easier for us to carry out our great Jihad against the infidels of the world."
"But this past month has been a real eye opener for both Osama and myself. We have watched with great interest as it was revealed that the Frenchman lied about being in Cambodia and the Cowboy did not fulfill his National Guard duties. This has given us great pause and we no longer feel it would be right for our membership to endorse either of these candidates."
"Therefore, by the will of Allah, I would like to announce that Al Qaeda and all of its members are formally endorsing the only candidate who hasn't lied about his military experience; Ralph Nader."
Happy thoughts to you.

DECEIVING THE VOTERS
I don't like this at all.
Free speech is one thing, but Conservative Leader Stephen Harper says he'll be tougher on loose-lipped caucus members who trample party principles. The fact that this move by Harper infringes on freedom of speech isn't the real issue here. What is the real issue is whether or not Harper is trying to deceive the Canadian voters into believing his Conservative Party stands for something it doesn't. By reigning in the loose cannons, he is attempting to paint a false picture of the party and what its members stand for.
Outbursts on abortion, same-sex rights and bilingualism played into Liberal hands during the June election campaign, Harper acknowledged Wednesday in an interview. Those mistakes won't happen again, he vowed.
"In a campaign, the whole issue is about what the party's running on. You expect members, if they're going to be on the team, to be on the team. Some of what happened last time can't be repeated, and it won't be repeated."
Harper will be "a more severe judge" of those whose public musings stray from the party platform, he said. He didn't offer details.
This goes for all the parties. One of the main reasons I never get upset over remarks by people like Carolyn Parrish or the loose cannons Harper referred to, is because they are just being honest about where they stand. The voters in Parrish's riding for instance, know for certain that she does not care for the Bush government--or maybe even Americans in general--and so they can vote accordingly because they are aware of her position on this issue.
The voters have a right to know exactly where each candidate stands on the issues of the day. If a candidate is pro-choice, then it's up to the candidate to let the voters know this before they go to the polls. To do otherwise is simply dishonest. For Harper to direct his party members to be dishonest about where they stand amounts to nothing more than a mass deception being perpetrated against the Canadian electorate.
Happy thoughts to you.

IS GOD A FLIP-FLOPPER
From a newsgroup posting.
Leviticus 24:19-21So is God a supreme flip-flopper?
19 "If a man injures his neighbor, just as he has done, so it shall be done to him: 20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; just as he has injured a man, so it shall be inflicted on him. 21 "Thus the one who kills an animal shall make it good, but the one who kills a man shall be put to death.
Then he sends his son Jesus, his messenger, who taught us how we are to treat others today in the new covenant:
Matthew 5:38-48
38 "You have heard that it was said, "AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.' 39 "But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 "If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. 41 "Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 "Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you
What a Flip Flopper! One day it's stone the adulterous bitch, the next day its love the poor sinning woman. How could anyone vote for such a flip flopper?

BREAKING RANKS
Bad news for Bush on the electoral college front.
South Charleston Mayor Richie Robb said today he may vote against George W. Bush in the Electoral College, even if the president carries West Virginia's popular vote.
Robb, long known as a maverick Republican, said he is considering using his position as one of the state's five Republican electors to protest what he believes are misguided policies of the current administration.
There is no provision in the West Virginia code that controls what an elector does at the Electoral College or provides any punishment for faithless electors.A recent Zogby poll shows Bush holding a 9 point lead over Kerry in West Virginia.
There have been eight electors in American history who have chosen to go against the popular vote in their home states, including Margarette Leach of Huntington, who declined to vote for Michael Dukakis in 1988, even though Dukakis carried West Virginia.

THE RIGHT'S DESCENT INTO FASCISM
Apparently the right whingers are no longer satisfied with just forcing their foul ideology on everyone else but are now insisting that everyone express themselves in a manner they approve of. For example, here's what Prime Minister Paul Martin had to say about the recent tragedy in Russia.
Canadians are outraged by reports of the barbaric acts of terrorism today in North Ossetia and by the unbelievable cruelty of hostage-takers firing on fleeing children. But like any good goose-stepping Nazi, Arthur Weinreb of Toronto Freeperpress was all over him for not expressing himself in a manner that met with party approval.
I wish to extend my deepest condolences and sympathies on behalf of all Canadians to the many families victimized by these terrible acts. While we are relieved that many of the hostages appear to have been returned to safety, we are deeply saddened by reports of innocent children and adults who have been injured or killed.
Paul Martin: "unbelievable"In another example of just how far down the path of fascism the right whingers have travelled, Daniel Pipes makes a hate list of media outlets that failed to use the terms deemed acceptable by the right whingers to describe the perpetrators.
This is how the prime minister described the siege of the school in Beslan, Russia, that saw Chechen and Arab terrorists indiscriminately kill babies and children last week.
What happened close to the Chechen border may be "unbelievable" in Paul Martin’s world, but to those of us who live in the real world, it was anything but.
The press, however, generally shies away from the word terrorist, preferring euphemisms. Take the assault that led to the deaths of some 400 people, many of them children, in Beslan, Russia, on September 3. Journalists have delved deep into their thesauruses, finding at least twenty euphemisms for terrorists:This is exactly how fascism begins its insidious creep into society. By continuously condemning and censuring people for not thinking, talking and dressing as they do, they eventually force everyone to act alike out of fear they will be attacked for not conforming. The greatest weapon against the creep of fascism is individualism and this is why the right whingers spew bile on a daily basis at anyone who does not conform to their beliefs. If they can force the rest of the population into conformity, they will be free to implement whatever odious policies--like internment camps for Arabs--they want because any opposition to them will be silenced out of fear.

HARPER RESURFACES
Stephen Harper has finally come out of hiding and stepped up to the plate as leader of the opposition party. His first order of business was to take aim at the US over the mad cow crisis that has been devastating Canada's cattle industry.
Harper blamed the continuing border closure on U.S. protectionist trade policies and deteriorating Canada-U.S. relations, saying he doesn't think it will open this year. However, Harper also blasted Paul Martin's liberals for failing to provide leadership and for the decline in the Canada/US relationship that has prolonged this crisis. But lets be fair. This type of protectionist action (ie. softwood lumber tariffs) on the part of the US began as soon as Bush took office which was long before the Iraq war that is at the root of frayed relations with our neighbour to the south. To blame the liberals for a climate that was initiated by the Americans is simply dishonest on his part and amounts to nothing more than cheap partisan politics.
"This is strictly a political problem. It has nothing to do with the safety of Canadian beef," said Harper. "The American actions are blatantly protectionist."

CHILD EXECUTIONS
From VanRamblings.
Amnesty International and medical experts from seven countries have sent an open letter to the heads of government in China, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Philippines, Iran, Sudan and the USA urging them to stop using the death penalty against children.Raymond provides a number of links pertaining to child executions and human rights standards including this one that gives details of the 38 children who have been executed since 1990.
The letter has been signed by 17 medical experts with outstanding credentials in the field of child and adolescent psychology, psychiatry and social development.
International standards prohibit the execution of child offenders--people who were under 18 years old at the time of the crime. These standards include the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the American Convention on Human Rights and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The relevant standards are respected by the overwhelming majority of the 80 countries which still retain and use the death penalty.

COALITION OF THE FLEEING
Bush and his supporters have often made a big deal out of the countries that are present in Iraq, but as Juan Cole points out, Bush's coalition is dwindling at an alarming rate.
Thailand: 423 troops leaving early on Aug. 31 instead of Sept. 20; 20 withdrawn on Aug. 10.He also notes that Poland and the Ukraine are preparing to withdraw their troops by January.
Norway: 10 currently in Iraq; 140 withdrawn on June 30. Cited reason: growing domestic opposition and peacekeepers needed elsewhere, such as Afghanistan.
Dominican Republic: 302 withdrawn on May 4. Cited reason: growing domestic opposition.
Honduras: 370 withdrawn on May 12. Cited reason: Troops were sent for reconstruction, not combat.
Nicaragua: 115 withdrawn on Feb. 4. Cited reason: lack of funds.
Philippines: 51 withdrawn on July 19. Cited reason: to save lives of hostages.
Singapore: 160 withdrawn on April 4. Cited reason: completed humanitarian mission.
Spain: 1,300 withdrawn on May 4. Cited reason: new government fulfilled campaign pledge.
This mass exodus, which has been gaining momentum over the past several months, isn't limited to the military either. India has asked all of its citizens to leave Iraq and two Turkish trucking companies along with a Kuwaiti firm have become the latest to announce they will cease operating in the country.
The reason for this is simple. Iraq is descending into chaos. Last month I made this map that shows just how widespread the fighting is and it hasn't changed in the weeks since then. In fact, the situation is getting worse as this 536 day old conflict now threatens to spread even into the relatively quiet Kurdish areas because of Turkey's pressure on the US to deal with the PKK. The US is losing ground every day to insurgents in every area of the country.
The bottom line is that Bush's imcompetence has lost the war in Iraq and his failure to recognize that by continuing the senseless carnage will only serve to ensure that even his goal of an Iraqi government more friendly to the US will not come to pass.
Happy thoughts to you.

GEORGE REISSFELDER
Every once in a while a miscarriage of justice is corrected. Here is the true story of George Reissfelder's long ordeal.
The two men [William Sullivan and George Reissfelder] had been convicted of first-degree murder and armed robbery during a $20,000 payroll holdup at the Railway Express Agency at Boston's South Station in 1966. Witnesses identified Reissfelder as being at the scene of the crime.Reissfelder laungished in prison for 15 years until his case was re-opened because Sullivan confessed that Reissfelder was innocent.
But for the 15 years of his incarceration, Reissfelder insisted that he did not commit the murder.
He served seven years of a life term in Walpole state prison before he was granted a one-day furlough, and then failed to return to the prison. Three years later, a Florida police officer was trying to arrest him for writing a bad check when Reissfelder pulled a gun and it went off.
No one was injured, but Reissfelder pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted murder because he was already facing a life term in Massachusetts and he had been told the sentences would run concurrently, according to Kerry.
In 1982, Kerry assisted his partner Roanne Sragow in obtaining a new trial for George Reissfelder, who had been wrongfully convicted as the 1967 murder accomplice of an infamous Boston criminal named William "Silky" Sullivan. Reissfelder was serving a life sentence, and in 1980, with the help of a so-called "jailhouse lawyer," a judge decided to appoint Sragow to challenge Reissfelder's conviction. Kerry and Sragow discovered that the convicted murderer, Silky Sullivan, while dying of leukemia in prison, confessed to a priest that Reissfelder was innocent. Kerry and Sragow obtained an affidavit from the priest, confirming that Sullivan confessed that Reissfelder was innocent. With this evidence, and the testimony of a Boston detective who believed that others and not Reissfelder were involved, Kerry and Sragow convinced the judge. Judge Andrew R. Linscott granted a new trial, the district attorney decided against filing new charges, and Reissfelder was subsequently released. The New Yorker has more on the shakey case that led to Reissfelder's conviction.
The other defendant, George Reissfelder, was arrested in a more roundabout way. Then twenty-six years old, Reissfelder already had a substantial criminal record--an armed robbery when he was seventeen, bad-check charges, and domestic violence against his wife. On the night of the murder of Michael Shaw, Reissfelder told his girlfriend that he was planning an armed robbery in South Boston. This information alarmed the girlfriend, who told her father of the plan, and he went to the police. Even though South Station is not in South Boston, the tie was close enough for the police, and they rousted Reissfelder the following afternoon. They found a gun, which tests later showed had not been fired, but which a witness said looked like one that had been brandished during the South Station murder, and Reissfelder was charged as Sullivan’s accomplice. Prosecutors asked for the death penalty for both men.Now a sleazebag by the name of Stephen Marks--who, not surprisingly, has connections to the Bush family--wants to use George Reissfelder's tragic circumstances to tell baseless lies about John Kerry who was one of the people that helped correct this miscarriage of justice.
One night during the trial, in July of 1967, a lawyer from Reissfelder’s defense team, John Costello, met the head of homicide investigations for the Boston Police Department. The officer made an astonishing revelation: he knew Reissfelder was innocent. "He told me, ‘We know your guy wasn’t there,’" Costello said recently. "They didn’t want to lose the conviction of Sullivan, because they knew he was the right guy, by admitting they had the wrong guy with Reissfelder." The authorities apparently figured that if they admitted they were wrong about Reissfelder, the jury might think they were wrong about Sullivan, too. "It was a death-penalty case," Costello went on, "and they were thinking this way. It was unbelievable." Costello brought the officer’s admission to the attention of the judge, but the officer denied making the statement, and the trial continued.
Jesse Taylor debunks more of this sleazebag's lies.

RIGHT WHINGERS AND FREEDOM
I can't help but note a disconnect between the right whinger's claims of being champions of promoting freedom around the world and their quest to strip away freedoms in the US itself. I'm not referring to the Patriot Act that so many liberals decry, but the right's ambition to strip women of their freedom to choose whether or not to have an abortion by working to have Roe v Wade overturned and the right's ambition to strip states of their freedom to decide whether or not they will allow gay marriage by introducing a federal amendment to the constitution to ban gay marriage.
I guess the right whingers only value freedom when it's convenient.
Happy thoughts to you.

ANTI-AMERICANISM IN CANADA
Industry Minister David Emerson said today that Canadians who insult the US were puting Canada's economy at risk.
Canadians who casually insult the United States are putting jobs and the long-term economic health of this country at risk, Industry Minister David Emerson says.He makes a good point. Having someone constantly make snide remarks about you can even wear on the patience of a saint. And I've often remarked that the right whingers were making enemies of everyone with their hate filled diatribes, so there is no reason that my belief shouldn't apply to hate filled diatribes against Americans as well.
Asked about Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish's recent gibe about American "idiots," Emerson said, "I think we need to have a national discussion so that we eliminate any doubt from people's minds that we have a very, very important stake in our relationship with the United States."
"And if we value our communities and our jobs and the jobs for our kids and our grandkids, we better come to terms with that."
But here's the thing. Emerson has overlooked the real source of anti-Americanism by focusing on the occasional remarks of people like Carolyn Parrish, when in fact, the real source of it is the hate filled diatribes of the Canadian right whingers.
For example, take a look at the right whinge blahg, Small Dead Animals. Katie has on her site, for Sept. 3rd, a hate filled diatribe against American Michael Moore and a hate filled diatribe against American John Kerry in which she calls him classless. On Sept. 2nd, she has a hate filled diatribe against American Chris Matthews and another hate filled diatribe against John Kerry in which she attacks him for being a flip-flopper. This is not the exception with Katie either, but rather the rule. She has a long history of insulting Americans for no other reason than they disagree with her beliefs.
Katie isn't an exception amongst Canada's right whingers either. Almost every one of them, from blahggers to columnists, have made a habit of bashing American Democrats; not because of any policies or actions that affect them, but again simply for the reason that they don't share the same beliefs.
So the next time some sanctimonious Canadian right whinger accuses you of being anti-American, simply point out that they are the ones who are responsible for the lion's share of gratuitous attacks against Americans.
Update: I just wanted to clarify a few things. I'm not saying that Canadian liberals or anti-war pundits never make gratuitous insults against Americans. Carolyn Parrish is one example and even I have been known to launch a few insults at Americans from time to time. The difference however, is that the target of our ire most often, President Bush, has in the past four years slapped numerous illegal tariffs on Canadian goods, pulled out of a number of international treaties that directly affect Canada (ie. Kyoto), left the job in Afghanistan unfinished thereby hampering the war on terror and waged an illegal war against Iraq that has destabilized the Middle East and made the world less safe. All of these things are policies that affect Canada and Canadians and are what most of us criticize.
By comparison, look at the people most often targeted by the Canadian right whingers. Michael Moore has done nothing more than make a film that criticized his own president and government. John Kerry has done nothing more than run for the presidency of the United States. Neither of these men has done anything nor implemented any polices that affect Canada or Canadians. There is absolutely no justification for the right whinger's attacks against either of these men.
While I'm not trying to say that insults against Americans by the left/anti-war side are justified, at least they are born out of the heat of criticizing American policy whereas the right whinger's insults are 100% gratuitous and completely unprovoked. Defending Bush's honour from his fellow Americans is simply not reason enough for Canadian right whingers to insult those Americans. This is why I'm claiming it's the right whingers who bear most of the responsibility for anti-Americanism in Canada.
Happy thoughts to you.

THE PLOT THICKENS
More info has been uncovered about the growing spy scandal in the White House.
FBI counterintelligence agents are investigating whether several Pentagon officials leaked classified information to Iraqi politician Ahmed Chalabi and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, according to a law enforcement official and other people familiar with the case.Warren Strobel has more.
Pentagon civilians in the office in which analyst Larry A. Franklin worked lobbied for a hawkish policy toward Iran and tried to have those views inserted into a highly classified presidential document that's a focus of an FBI espionage investigation, current and former U.S. officials said. The best coverage of this story is at War and Peace.
Investigators are trying to determine whether Franklin shared the document with the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, the main pro-Israel lobby, in an attempt to enlist Israeli support for their proposals.

TROUBLE BREWING IN NORTHERN IRAQ
Salvage points to this report that Turkey may invade Northern Iraq in order to deal with Kurdish rebels.
The Turkish government hinted Sept. 1 that it may send troops into Iraq to fight Turkish Kurd rebels there. This is most likely just sabre rattling on the part of the Turkish government to force the US into dealing with the Kurdish groups who are responsible for attacking Turkey, but either way it will once again put the US in a no-win situation. If they do nothing, Turkey may indeed attack and this will undoubtably cause the Kurdish groups to unite against them, further destabilizing Iraq. If the US moves against the Kurds, it will probably not sit well with the rest of them causing a similar effect but against the US.
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul told reporters here that Turkey would do "whatever its security required."
"The United States is not yet in a position to launch a military operation against the [rebel group] PKK," Gul said in an apparent sign of growing Turkish impatience with the United States. "We shall not proceed by relying on another country. We know how to deal with our enemy."
Just one more "miscalculation" in the Bush quagmire.
Happy thoughts to you.

A MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE
It's amazing just how far the Bush government will go to avoid admitting they made a mistake.
When Dr Thomas Butler noticed vials of plague bacteria were missing from his Texas university lab, he did the right thing and informed the FBI - only to find himself the prime suspect in a bio-terrorism investigation. Now he's in jail, but his fate was sealed by paranoia and prejudice.
Ashcroft immediately briefed the President on the missing plague. It did not matter that the FBI soon came to the conclusion that the vials had probably been destroyed accidentally. These 30 containers of yersinia pestis were now a national emergency, and Dr Thomas Butler, who had written a paper in the 1970s that pioneered oral rehydration therapy for diarrhoea and who could thus, with no arrogance, claim to have saved millions of lives, was now Dr Plague, suspected bio-terrorist.
According to his lawyers he was offered a deal - plead guilty and get six months in jail. He wouldn't plead guilty, he said, because he wasn't guilty. So the prosecutors threw the book at him. "It's called count stacking," explains Turley. "They throw as many counts as they can at the jury and hope they'll split the difference."
They found him guilty on some contractual charges, but acquitted him on other charges relating to the same contract. "These are minor contractual disputes!" says Turley, still incredulous. "They could have been an internal university matter. We haven't found a single case in history like this. The government has taken civil university rules and criminalised them."If this type of incident was an isolated case, it could be brushed off. But it's not. It's an established pattern of behaviour by a paranoid, self-serving Bush government that is slowly but surely stripping away the rights and freedoms of Americans.
Happy thoughts to you.

Paul Wells bitchslaps the France bashers.
Two French journalists are in peril of their lives at the hands of thugs in Iraq. Ah-ha, says the Globe's man: a chance to teach the surrender monkeys some hard truths about life in the modern world. "France has been astonished to learn that it is in the same position as so many others," the editorialist writes.Happy thoughts to you.
It is always a bit pathetic when people who discovered terrorism on Sept. 11, 2001 think they're ahead of everyone else. Memo to the Globe: Islamic fundamentalists have been perpetrating murderous attacks against French citizens and on French soil for decades. France has resisted through a far more sophisticated and, in some cases, brutal use of its police, intelligence services, courts and legislatures than anything the Globe and Mail would have tolerated on Sept. 10.
