2004 CANADIAN FEDERAL ELECTION: AND THE WINNER IS
Election Board
LIB----5/132
CP-----6/89
NDP----3/18
BQ-----0/54
GRN----0/0
IND----0/1
Leading/Elected
7:30pm: First results are coming in from Atlantic Canada.
More to come.
8:00pm: The popular vote so far for Atlantic Canada breaks down as follows; LIB-47%, CP-33%, NDP-18%. The last Ipsos poll put the numbers at; LIB-44%, CP-23%, NDP-26%.
8:30pm: Newfoundland/Labrador results are official; LIB-5, CP-2. Prince Edward Island results are official; LIB-4. New Brunswick results; LIB-7, CP-2, NDP-1. Nova Scotia results; LIB-5, CP-3, NDP-3. Popular vote in Atlantic Canada; LIB-44%, CP-31%, NDP-21%. This is pretty much what was expected from Atlantic Canada. The Liberals have gained or are set to gain 5 seats since the last election. The Conservatives have lost 4 and the NDP has lost 1.
9:00pm: Nova Scotia is now official; LIB-6, CP-3, NDP-2. New Brunswick is now official; LIB-7, CP-2, NDP-1. So indeed the Liberals have gained 5 seats at the expense of the Conservatives who lost 4 and the NDP who lost 1. It would look as though the majority of those undecideds I talked about yesterday evening have come out in favour of the Conservatives. But it also looks like the Liberals managed to drain away enough support from the NDP to come out on top. As soon as the Ontario and Quebec numbers come in, we'll have a clearer picture of what those undecideds finally decided to do.
The polls don't close in Ontario and Quebec for another half hour but here are the most recent poll numbers for those provinces.
Ontario; LIB-38%, CP-34%, NDP-20%.
Quebec; LIB-29%, CP-9%, NDP-5%, BQ-48%.
9:30pm: The polls are closed across most of the country now. In addition to Ontario and Quebec, they're also closed in the prairie provinces. Here are the latest poll results from those provinces.
Manitoba/Saskatchewan; LIB-32%, CP-36%, NDP-25%.
Alberta; LIB-20%, CP-59%, NDP-11%.
The next hour will decide which gang of monkeys runs Bananada for the next 3-5 years.
10:00pm. The polls have just closed in British Columbia. The last poll results.
LIB-24%, CP-44%, NDP-22%.
The early results have the Liberal Party out to a significant lead. However, at this point that number is a little misleading since there aren't that many polls reporting so far. The next half hour will provide a clearer picture. An interesting note. For a short time there was a candidate for the Marxist-Leninist Party leading in one of the Toronto ridings.
10:30pm: CBC has just declared the Liberals will form a minority government. CP leader, Stephen Harper has won his riding and so has BQ leader, Gilles Duceppe. LIB leader and PM, Paul Martin, along with NDP leader, Jack Layton are not even leading in their ridings at this point. Bwahahahaha! Liberal candidate, Ken Dryden--yes, the ex Montreal Canadians goaltender and former Leafs GM, has won in his York Centre riding.
11:00pm: Prime Minister Martin has now won his riding and Layton is leading in his. In my riding of Parry Sound/Muskoka, the Liberal candidate has won.
Overall popular vote is shaking out as follows; LIB-39%, CP-29%, NDP-16%, BQ-11%. It's just as I said yesterday. The bulk of those undecideds have voted for the Liberals. Popular vote for rest of the provinces.
Quebec; LIB-33%, CP-9%, NDP-4%, BQ-49%.
Ontario; LIB-44%, CP-32%, NDP-19%.
Manitoba; LIB-32%, CP-39%, NDP-24%.
Saskatchewan; LIB-28%, CP-41%, NDP-23%.
Alberta; LIB-21%, CP-61%, NDP-10%.
British Columbia; LIB-26%, CP-41%, NDP-24%.
11:30pm: Layton finally won his riding. Damn. As it stands right now, the Liberals will be able to form a minority government with the aid of the NDP. Between them they just squeak over the 155 seats needed for a majority. But how long this will last is anyone's guess and we could end up doing this again in less than a year.
12:30am: It seems as though a number of the ridings are too close to call right now, so I'll give a final wrap up tomorrow.
Goodnight for now.
Happy thoughts to you.
